1. Getting the most from your starter deck

So you are thinking about getting into Huntik, or you have already bought the Starter but are unsure what to do with it.  You’ve come to the right place! I have spent a lot of time demoing the Starter to players at conventions and have come up with a list of things to allow you to get the most from the Huntik Trading Card Game.

Make use of everything in the Starter!

The Huntik TCG Starter is unlike any other Starter before it. It contains two decks, a Mission pack (21 cards), a high-quality game mat, an easy-to-read rulebook, and a special bonus DVD with a first of its kind animated tutorial and full-length Huntik episode!  If you are new to TCGs, watch the DVD first.  It will give you the basics and show you how the animated series comes to life through the cards.  Once you have an idea of how the game works, its time to find out about…

Good vs. Evil

The Huntik TCG follows the television series by being split into Good and Evil factions. Your deck can be either Good (the Blue cards) or Evil (the Red cards); a Good deck cannot contain Evil cards, nor can an Evil deck contain Good cards. The difference between Good and Evil is the fundamental division in the game.
The Good guys tend to have abilities that allow them to move with speed or surprise and help each other out. The Evil guys can be a bit bigger and are often able to ready themselves to move again. Knowing how each side works will allow you to plan for future turns to give you the best chances of completing the mission. Especially important are the…
Exclusive Starter Holofoil Rare Cards
The Starter comes with two rare cards that are not available in booster packs. The Good rare is Caliban, an enormous 8ATK/6DEF Hero. You have to discard cards to keep him in play from turn to turn, but your opponent is going to have a lot of trouble trying to get past him. For you Evil players, make sure you keep your Janus Knights handy as they are your only chance of taking Caliban down in a one-on-one battle.
The Evil rare is Gar-Ghoul. He is only 4ATK/3DEF but he sure packs a punch! If you attack with Gar-Ghoul, you can KO enemy heroes without risk of KO to Gar-Ghoul. This is really important for establishing a winning board position, as the player with the most heroes in play is usually winning. For Good players, don’t move too close to Zone 4 or 5 if you don’t want to risk being beaten up by this guy; although sometimes you have to because…

Each Mission is a New Game

Make sure you start with the Training Missions, as they tend to be easier, but certainly play all the missions that come with the Starter. You will find that some cards are better suited to particular missions.  For example, Solwing seems small at 1ATK/1DEF, but by moving up to three zones and being unblockable, it is very well suited if you’re trying to Escape the Mansion!  Alternatively, when trying to find the Ring of Arc, Kreutalk becomes a lot better as it can move more zones when carrying an object.
Each mission makes the game different, so you don’t have to worry about certain cards being better than others; each have different levels of importance based on the mission you are trying to complete. When you collect more cards beyond the starter, make sure you have different heroes so you can chop and change your deck to suit the particular needs of the mission.  The Huntik Starter offers so many chances to keep the game interesting and fresh so make sure you…

Swap Decks and Missions

The game plays very differently depending on the deck you are playing and the demands of the mission you are trying to complete. Keep mixing things up so that your opponents won’t know what to expect from you! After you feel like you have mastered the basic missions you can move on to the Expert and Mutual missions, where the level of complexity goes up a few notches. At the higher levels you will notice that some of the abilities and cards you might have thought weren’t so good suddenly become a lot more relevant! There are even options for solo missions with Huntik, so you can play anywhere and anytime!

Moving on from the Starter

There are plenty of other cards available beyond the Starter decks, so grab a few boosters and find them for yourself! A whole host of Seekers and Titans with all sorts of abilities await you. New combos and powerful effects can be put to use in many more missions too. There are even tournaments with special missions at your local gaming store, so make sure you check out this site further to see where you can find new and challenging opponents to play! You can win lots of different types of prizes including exclusive and powerful promotional cards only available to those playing in tournaments and the Seeker League around the world.  Who knows, you might even see me at one of them!
